By all accounts, Apple’s new iPhone X have been selling briskly, right when the company needed a big hit, with long lines at stores, and the phone selling out quickly in 20 big U.S. cities. If you go to Apple’s website, they now report a backlog of 3 or 4 weeks before you can get your hands on one.
But some users who have it in hand already are reporting that it shipped with an ironic Autocorrect glitch–one that makes it incredibly frustrating to type.
The problem? Some users report that if they type the letter “i,” it autocorrects to a letter “A” with an odd symbol after it–something that looks like a question mark within a box.
In other words, “iPhone” would basically become “A[?]phone.”
As customers took to Twitter (where else?) to complain and commiserate (and to realize just how often we all use the letter “i,”, Apple acknowledged the issue. For now, the company offered the following self-help tutorial that will let users “work around the issue until it’s fixed in a future software update.”
So “A[?]f” you’re one of the affected “A[?]phone” users, here’s what to do, according to Apple:
- Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement.
- Tap +.
- For Phrase, type an upper-case “I”. For Shortcut, type a lower-case “i.”
What caused the issue? Apple isn’t saying, but there are some technical theories. (If you’re interested, check out this treatment of the issue.)
As for the rest of us, an Apple spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal that this only affects the latest iOS update, 11.1, although the Journal and some others report having the problem with earlier versions of the operating system as well.
The spokesperson told the Journal that a real software fix would be available for beta release this week, “with wide rollout to follow.”
Hopefully that will fix the issue. And then you can focus on worrying about not dropping it.
